BL23 Kidney Shu

BL23 (Shèn Shū, “Kidney Shu”) is the Back-Shu of Kidney point of the Bladder Meridian. BL23 is located on the back, 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra (L2). It tonifies Kidney Qi and Yin, strengthens the back, and benefits the ears.

Needling

Oblique insertion medially 0.8-1.2 cun; caution for pneumothorax.

⚠ Pregnancy: avoid — may stimulate uterine contraction (miscarriage / early-labour risk).
⚠ Pneumothorax risk: oblique/shallow only, never deep perpendicular over the chest wall.
