The Pericardium channel originates in the chest, emerging from the Pericardium and descending through the diaphragm to connect with the San Jiao. A branch ascends along the throat to the ear. The main external pathway emerges from the chest, crosses the axilla, and descends along the medial aspect of the upper arm between the Lung and Heart channels. It continues down the forearm between the tendons of palmaris longus and flexor carpi radialis, enters the palm, and terminates at the tip of the middle finger.
The Pericardium channel protects the Heart, acting as its 'envoy' or 'bodyguard' against external pathogens and emotional stress. It governs blood circulation, particularly in the chest and upper limbs, and influences mental and emotional well-being by regulating the Heart's spirit (Shen).
Disorders of the Pericardium channel manifest as cardiac pain, palpitations, chest oppression, and mental-emotional disturbances such as anxiety, insomnia, and irritability. Physical symptoms can include spasms of the elbow and arm, flushed face, and a feeling of heat in the palms.
