BL48 (Yanggang, “Yang Headrope”) is an acupuncture point on the Bladder Meridian. It is located on the back, 3 cun lateral to the posterior midline, at the level of the lower border of the spinous process of the 11th thoracic vertebra (T11). This point is located 1.5 cun lateral to BL20. It regulates qi, harmonizes the middle jiao, alleviates pain.

Needling

Oblique insertion 0.5-0.7 cun. Caution: pneumothorax.

⚠ Pneumothorax risk: oblique/shallow only, never deep perpendicular over the chest wall.

Yanggang is a useful point for regulating qi and harmonizing the middle jiao, particularly when there is pain or discomfort in the abdominal region. It is often employed for digestive issues stemming from qi stagnation, such as abdominal distention, pain, and indigestion. Its action on qi regulation also makes it beneficial for local back pain. It can be used with ST36 (Zusanli) to strengthen the middle jiao.
