BL34 Xialiao

BL34 (Xialiao, “Xialiao”) is an acupuncture point on the Bladder Meridian. Located over the second posterior sacral foramen, medial and inferior to the posterosuperior iliac spine (PSIS). It based on the classical text, this point addresses disorders of the head and sensory orifices, particularly the ears, and may calm the Spirit.

Needling

Perpendicular-oblique insertion, directed towards the sacral foramen, 1.0 to 1.5 cun. Care must be taken to avoid deep insertion which could damage the sacral nerve plexus.

Clinical notes

This point is one of the four 'Liao' points on the sacrum, collectively known as Baliao. While the classical text provided focuses on conditions of the head and ears, modern practice heavily utilizes this point for genitourinary and gynecological disorders, as well as for local pain in the lower back and sacrum. The classical indications suggest a distal effect on the head, possibly via the Bladder channel's connection to the brain.
